D.I.Y. Stenciling a Photo Frame

When is the last time you used a stencil on a project?

With the use of lasers, chunky stencils of the past have changed over time into intricate details.

Rather than use paper and embellishments, we are going to design this frame by using a stencil.

Supplies

1 Unfinished Photo Frame
Momenta Complements Decor Stencil in Medallion
Americana Gloss Enamels in Black
Viva Inka-Gold in 903
DecoArt Elegant Finish Metallic Paint in Rich Espresso
Paintbrush
Tape

All supplies used for this project can be found at our Bonney Lake store.

1. Use the paintbrush to cover the entire frame in black paint.
2. Apply the Rich Espresso paint on top of the black paint while it is still wet to give it a metallic sheen. Set the frame aside to dry.
3. Once dry, secure the stencil to the bottom of the frame with tape.
4. Use a hard bristle paintbrush or your finger to smudge the Inka-Gold into the stencil. If you use your finger, wear a glove because it can get messy.

Smudging the Inka-Gold in certain areas of the frame gives it a unique distressed look. The thing about smudging is that it does not have to be perfect.

5. Using the same paintbrush or your finger, gently smudge the Inka-Gold around the edges of the opening and the frame. Set aside to dry.
6. Once dry, secure the stencil to one side of the frame and smudge Inka-Gold into the stencil. Repeat this step until all four sides have been stenciled.
7. Add a photo of your choice inside the frame and proudly display in an area of your home.

D.I.Y. How to Color Items Using Alcohol Ink

Have you ever looked for a vase in a particular color and could not find it?

What about looking for flowers in the right shade of berry to coordinate with your decor?

Have you heard of Adirondack Alcohol Ink? It is an acid-free, fade resistant, fast drying transparent ink that can be used on items such as paper, fabric, metal, glass, plastic and more.

Supplies

Adirondack Alcohol Ink
Tim Holtz Foam Applicator
Inkssentials Mini Mister
Inkssentials Non-Stick Craft Mat
Alcohol Blending Solution
A Clear Glass Vase
A White Flower

Let's start with coloring a vase.

Apply a small amount of alcohol ink to the foam applicator.
Use a tapping action to cover the vase in the ink.
Set aside and let dry when done.

Now, let's color a flower.

Apply a small amount of alcohol ink into the mister.
Spray the flower a few times and watch the ink saturate. Go over the missed areas.
Set aside to let dry when done.

D.I.Y. Memo Chalkboard

This double-sided chalkboard is an easy way to keep you and your family organized!

Supplies

1 Unfinished Standing Memo Board
Americana Chalkboard Paint
DecoArt Crafter's Acrylic Paint in Silver Morning
Paintbrush
Bistro 6mm Chalk Marker
Embellishments (optional)

All supplies used for this project can be found at our Bonney Lake store.

Using the paintbrush, apply the silver paint to the base of the memo board.
Then, apply the chalkboard paint to the front and back of the board.
Let the board dry and it will be ready to use!

Date night dinner for two!

Since you can use either side of the board for writing, you can reserve one side as a menu and the other for notes.

Feel free to dress up your chalkboard with embellishments using objects like buttons, beads, flowers, bottle caps, paper, etc. or even choose a different paint color for the base.

Now, if only doing the laundry was as quick as this project...

Inspiration: Canvas

Whenever you hear someone say the word "canvas," do you immediately think of painting?

Canvases have moved beyond the world of painting and into the crafting world. Here are examples of how you can use a canvas.

Add decorative paper, photos, and vinyl to create wall art.

Use canvases to display photos.

Mini canvases can be used as embellishments.

Add embellishments and vinyl words to a painted canvas.

Instead of painting the canvas, cover it with decorative paper.

Attach multiple canvases together.

Cover the canvas in fabric and ribbon to create a memory board.

Kids Craft: Clothespin Magnet

What better way to display your child's artwork or photo on the refrigerator than with something they created?

Supplies

One Giant Wooden Clothespin
Embellishments such as Glitter, Buttons, Ribbon, Stickers, etc.
Paint (optional)
Paintbrush (optional)
Two 1" Magnets
527 All Purpose Glue
Scissors

All supplies used for this project can be found at our Bonney Lake store.

Your child can choose to paint the clothespin first before adding embellishments, or embellishing the natural wood design.
After the paint and/or embellishments are dry, a parent should assist the child in adhering the magnet to the back of the clothespin. If you do not have 527 All Purpose Glue, you can use a similar adhesive.
Apply glue to the back of each magnet and place one at the top and one at the bottom of the clothespin (on the backside).
Set the clothespin aside to let the adhesive for the magnets to thoroughly dry.
Proudly display on the refrigerator for all to enjoy.

Kids Craft: My Sweet Cupcake Ornament

A cute craft for kids that makes an adorable Valentine's Day gift for someone special!

Supplies

1 Headstone Box
1 Doodle Bug 12" x 12" Paper in Sweetcakes
1 Doodle-Pops Cardstock Cupcake Sticker
Kelly Panacci Embossed Stickers (Valentine Theme)
Delta Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint in Cardinal Red
Paintbrush
Scissors
Adhesive
Pencil

All supplies used for this project can be found at our Bonney Lake store.

Trace the headstone box onto the paper.
Cut out the shape and set aside.
Use the paintbrush to apply the paint completely to the headstone box. Set aside to dry.
Once dry, adjust the shape of the paper to fit into the box by trimming (if needed).
Then, glue the paper to the inside of the box. You can use an adhesive of your choice but for this project, Laurie used 527 Multi-Purpose Glue.
Place the "Sweet" sticker from the Kelly Panacci sticker sheet towards the top part of the paper.
Place the Doodle-Pops cupcake sticker towards the bottom of the paper. You are not limited to using this particular sticker as you can very well choose a different cupcake sticker to use for this project.
Proudly display in an area of your home or give it as a gift.

And the creativity does not stop there! Your child can embellish the sides with glitter, stick-on jewels, ribbon, etc. or even decide to paint designs onto the box. Remember, the possibilities for creativity are endless!

D.I.Y. Photo Frame

What could you do with a wood panel like this?

You can turn it into a photo frame!

Supplies

1 Wood Panel
1 8 x 10 Photo
A Spool of 1 1/2" Ribbon
1 Sheet of Decorative Paper
Vinyl Words "Giggles Friends Joy"
527 Multi-Use Glue
Americana Acrylic Paint in Lamp (Ebony) Black
Paintbrush

All supplies used for this project can be found at our Bonney Lake store.

1. Using the paintbrush, apply black paint to the entire frame of the wood panel. Set aside and let dry.
2. Cut the ribbon into a 30" length.
3. Use adhesive to glue the middle part of the ribbon completely flat to the panel. We glued ours a little halfway down the panel.

4. Apply adhesive to the back of the decorative paper and adhere it to the panel. You will be gluing the paper on top of the ribbon.
5. Cut the photo to fit the inside top area of the panel.
6. Apply adhesive to the back of the photo and adhere it to the top part of the panel.

7. Apply the vinyl words to the paper.

8. Take ends of the ribbon to tie it loosely into a double knot to make the ends appear as if it's a bow.

9. Proudly display in an area of your home.

Acrylic Painting and Mixed Media Art Classes

Meet Therese Tucker, the Acrylic Painting and Mixed Media Art Instructor at our Bonney Lake store.

Tucker, a local actress, recently moved back to Washington state with her husband and their daughter, an energetic little girl whom Tucker says keeps her on her toes. New York, the place where she met her husband, has been her home for the last ten years.

Creating art has always been a passion of Tucker's, in which she has expressed through dancing, acting, painting, and even working as a make-up artist. Tucker also enjoys jewelry making and creating fun softies.

How long have you been painting and creating mixed media art?

I have been drawing and painting from the time I could pick up a pencil...or get into my mom's make-up bag! Three years ago is when I started making jewelry, which lead me to open my own Etsy shop. Making softies started when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. I wanted to be able to make her lovely, silly toys that had sentimental value.

How did you get started in painting and mixed media?

It came naturally, to me. I have used drawing and painting as a method for expressing myself at an early age. My foray into mixed media has been a long journey and was born from my frustration that just a pencil or paint alone could not represent what I was trying to express.

How did you develop your skills?

Experimenting and making mistakes -- it is my philosophy.

What do you enjoy the most about painting and mixed media?

To quote Bob Ross, "happy little mistakes." I love the beauty that comes from what you didn't expect to happen.

What do you love most about teaching painting and mixed media to others? How does it make you feel?

I love watching my students have the "AHA!" moment. I meet a lot of people who feel intimidated by the idea of mixed media art. Some of them are worried they are just making a mess. That's when I get them to stand back and see their art. Then, they realize they have just created something unique and beautiful. My students inspire me all the time. I find that I learn new things from them, as well. It's very exciting!

What can you say to those that are just beginning?

Art is not about knowing how do to it -- it's about the willingness to explore and express yourself.

What words of inspiration would you like to share?

I'd like to end this with a quote by Albert Einstein: "Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere."

Rainy and Snow Day Activities

On rainy days, have you ever thought about taking up a new hobby? Or maybe you're looking for fun activities to do with your children?

What about the times where you were snowed in...then what do you do?

Here are ideas that you can find at our store to keep you and your family entertained.

1. Painting. Paint-by-Number kits enables kids to paint an amazing picture without having to take a single art lesson. There is also acrylic and oil paints for those that want to try and those that love painting.

2. Puzzles. A puzzle is a great way for families to bond and work as a team. It's an incredible feeling when you take that last puzzle piece, the 1000th puzzle piece, to complete the puzzle.

3. Drawing and Coloring.Who doesn't love their refrigerator covered in their children's artwork? Well, not literally, unless it's washable. From a family portrait to flowers to cars, coloring and drawing allows children to let their imagination run wild.

4. Activity Kits. Parents, remember when friendship bracelets were popular when you were in school? Well, they're still just as popular now! With a variety of how-to activity kits from Klutz and Melissa & Doug, kids can learn as they create.

5. Games. Ever heard of Farkel? If you haven't, now you have and we bet you'll never be able to forget its unique name. So what is Farkel? Farkel is a fast-paced six-dice game--whoever rolls to 10,000 points wins the game! This is just one of the many fun games we have. Apples to Apples, Phase 10, Uno, Pass the Pig, and more -- we have a large selection of games to engage the whole family.

6. Crafts. We have a huge assortment of unfinished items just begging to be completed such as these birdhouses. Our variety of acrylic paints and embellishments can help you turn any one of our unfinished items into a work of art.

This makes a great craft project for kids.

7. Scrapbooking. We can't think of a better way to spend a day inside than scrapbooking photos of memorable moments. Our Scrapbooking Department carries a large selection of paper, tools, embellishments, dies, and more!

8. Knitting. Knitting can be a very relaxing activity, unless you're trying to knit ten sweaters in a week. Our vast selection of yarn and tools, including patterns can help you create beautiful apparel and accessories.

D.I.Y. 3D Flower Embellishment

Remember the pretty flower embellishment from the D.I.Y. Photo Collage Tray post? Due to popular demand, we created a tutorial for it!

Supplies

Sizzix Big Shot
Sizzix 3D Flower Die
7 Gypsies Tissue Paper
Awl
1 Brad
Scissors

All supplies used for this project can be found at our Bonney Lake store.

Cut the 7 Gypsies paper into eight 4" x 4" squares.
Stack all 8 squares, then fold it once, and then once more.
Place the folded tissue paper onto the 3D flower die and run it through the Big Shot. If you do not have the Sizzix 3D Flower Die, you should be able to use any flower die. Just remember you will need eight flower dies.
Unfold the tissue paper and use an awl to poke a hole in the center of the papers.
Place a brad through the hole to secure all the layers of paper.
Smoosh each layer one by one to fluff the petals, giving it its 3D look.

Adhesives: Which One Should I Use?

With a vast variety of adhesives, choosing the right one for your project can be a little overwhelming.

How do you know which adhesive to use for...

Paper?

Wood?

Glass?

Fabric?

A few of our own, Joy, Mary Anne, Melody, and Pershette, share their favorite adhesives for crafting.

Joy's Go-To Adhesives

Claudine Hellmuth Studio Multi-Medium in Matte. I love this product! I use it as a glue and a sealant. It is ideal for decoupaging.
Tombow MONO Adhesive Permanent. This is what I use for paper to paper crafts.
Pioneer Embellishment Glue Stick. Great for gluing embellishments to paper.
Scor-Pal Scor-Tape. This is an essential for me because this is what I use to create washi tape.
Beacon Fabri-Tac. This is great for fabric and felt. It dries quickly and does not seep through.
Beacon 527 Multi-Use Glue. This is an aggressive, heavy duty glue for heavy duty projects that use wood, glass, metal, etc. It's thinner than E-6000 but just as strong.

Mary Anne's Go-To Adhesives

HERMA Classic Vario Adhesive Squares. I use these for photos because all it takes is a couple of adhesive squares to stick photos onto paper.
Tombow MONO Multi Liquid Glue. Great for adhering paper to paper and it does not cause the paper to ripple.
Aleene's Tacky Glue. This tacky glue is great for crafting with kids because it is easy for them to use.
Scotch ATG 700. This framing adhesive is what you use for book projects.
Beacon Zip Dry. I use this to create chipboard word albums.

Melody's Go-To Adhesives

Claudine Hellmuth Studio Multi-Medium in Matte. I love Claudine Hellmuth! You can basically use it for everything. I love the way it goes on and I have not ever experienced the dreaded "rippling" effect. I use it on jewelry, glass, paper, and wood.
Beacon Zip Dry. Great for adhering paper to paper. It dries clear and quickly, and a little goes a long way.
Beacon 527 Multi-Use Glue. This is for heavy duty projects and has less odor than E-6000 but just as strong. Great for non-porous surfaces.
Beacon Fabri-Tac. This is the best fabric glue to use. Period.
Scor-Pal Scor-Tape. This thin double-sided tape is perfect for book bindings and creating your own washi tape. It is also great for adhering paper and photos to paper.
Inkssentials Wondertape. This double-sided tape is a little thicker than Scor-Tape. I use this tape for embellishments by placing the tape onto glass or paper, then covering it with glitter or small beads.
Gorilla Glue. This glue is for major projects and great for gluing wood to wood.

Pershette's Go-To Adhesives

E-6000. I love this glue! I practically use it for almost all my crafts. It is great for adhering unlike items like glass to wood, or metal to glass. It dries clear and will not break down over time. This is a very heavy duty glue so make sure you are using it in a well ventilated area.
Beacon 3-in-1 Glue. This is not as strong as the E-6000 and it has less odor, but the 3-in-1 can be used for multiple projects that has paper, glass, wood, etc.
Beacon Zip Dry. This is the perfect paper glue. I use it to adhere paper to paper and all my paper projects.
Beacon Fabri-Tac. This dries fairly fast and can be used on any type of fabric.
FloraCraft StyroGlue. This the only glue that will not ruin the STYROFOAM™ you may be using for your project.

What are your favorite adhesives to use for crafting?

We will show you how to create wall art using this ready-to-decorate framed tile for your home.

Supplies

Framed Tile
Acetate Paper
"Live, Laugh, Love" Vinyl Words
Claudine Helmouth Studio Multi-Medium in Matte
Paintbrush
Scissors

All supplies used for this project can be found at our Bonney Lake store.

Cut the acetate paper to fit the size of three of the tiles on the frame. Another idea for this project is to use photos instead of acetate paper.
Use the paintbrush to apply the multi-medium to the back of the acetate square.
Adhere the acetate paper to the tile, smoothing out any pockets of air.
Apply vinyl words to the blank tile. You can use vinyl words of your choice but for this project, you will be using "Live, Laugh, Love."
Display proudly in an area of your home.

Inkssentials Non-Stick Craft Paper. I love that it's non-stick! I can use adhesives and if I miss the area I'm gluing or taping, it just peels right off. I use the Inkssentials Non-Stick Craft Paper for all my crafts.
Tim Holtz Non-Stick Micro Serrated Craft Scissors. These scissors are sharp and non-stick, which is perfect for cutting tape or papers with the adhesive back. I also that my hand can comfortably hold the handle while cutting.
Spellbinder Nestability Dies. I love creating layers with these dies. These are one of my favorite dies because their basic shapes go with everything, and I can use them in my Sizzix Big Shot.
EK Success Edger Punch. This handy puncher is easy to use and love the designs.
Black, White, and Craft Paper. These three colors are always in my paper stack because they go with everything and make great backgrounds.
Scor-Tape. This is how I make my own washi tape.
Distress Ink. The versatility of this ink is incredible. If you've never used it before, I highly recommend you give it a try. Once you do, you will make it a part of your scrapbooking essentials.
Stickles. This all-in-one glitter and glue is awesome! You get an amazing amount of glitter in every drop. No need to use both glitter and glue separately to create the same effect. It is mess free way to give your paper or embellishment a lot of sparkle.

D.I.Y. LOVE Canvas Project

Are you loving this mild winter we are having? Or are you wishing for snow? If so, you are in luck because there is snow in the forecast, starting this weekend.

Onto our project...with Valentine's Day about a month away, what Valentine projects do you have planned?

Our LOVE Canvas project is designed to serve as wall art for your home, or make an awesome Valentine's gift for someone special.

Now, let's get crafting!

Supplies

Canvas
Black Bella Solid Fabric
Wooden Letters to spell out "Love"
Delta Soy Paint in Red Apple
Two KAISER Scrapbook Clear Rhinestones
E-6000
Paintbrush
Stapler or Staple Gun

All supplies used for this project can be found at our Bonney Lake store.

Use the paintbrush to apply paint to the front and side of all the letters
Set the letters aside to dry when done.
Cut and measure the fabric to wrap around the canvas.
Use a stapler or staple gun to secure the fabric onto the canvas. Be sure to tighten any loose areas and smooth any ripples in the fabric before stapling.
Assuming the paint on the letters are dry, let's proceed by sticking the rhinestones in the desired pattern onto each letter.
We are going to glue the letters using E-6000 onto the fabric-covered canvas. Be sure that you are in a well-ventilated area before proceeding to use E-6000.
You are going to apply glue to the back of the letter "L" and firmly press it onto the desired area of the fabric-covered canvas. Repeat this step for the rest of the letters.
Let your project lay flat until it is completely dry.
Proudly display in an area of your home.

D.I.Y. Great Love Frame

Doodle Bug Design, Inc. Paper in "Sweet Cakes"
Queen & Co. Self Adhesive Pearl Dots
Elmer's Spray Adhesive
Scissors

All supplies used for this project can be found at our Bonney Lake store.

Cut the Sweet Cakes paper to fit the open space of the floating frame.
Spray the front of the Sweet Cakes paper, not the backside of the paper, with Elmer's spray adhesive.
Place the adhesive side of the paper behind the glass of the frame.
Apply the vinyl phrase onto the front of the glass of the frame.
Stick the pearl dots onto the frame in the desired pattern.
Proudly display in an area of your home.

Kids Craft: Canvas Handprint

Remember the days when your child was this little? Treasure that moment in time with a canvas handprint!

Supplies

6" x 6" Canvas
Paint
Embellishments (Buttons, Flowers, Stickers, Glitter, etc.)
Ribbon
Paintbrush
Scissors
Adhesive
Stapler

All supplies used for this project can be found at our Bonney Lake store.

Have your child paint the canvas with the color of their choice with a paintbrush. Painting the sides of the canvas is optional.
Apply paint to the child's hand using a paintbrush in the color of their choice.
Assist your child in pressing their hand firmly onto the canvas to create the handprint. You can touch up the handprint on the canvas with the paintbrush if some areas did not properly transfer.
Apply adhesive to the embellishments your child wishes to use.
When finished, set the canvas aside to let dry.
Once dried, use a stapler to staple ribbon onto the back of the canvas.
Proudly display in an area of your home.

Sewing and Embroidery Classes

Meet Lisa Brinkley, the Sewing and Embroidery Instructor here at our Bonney Lake store.

She's an avid sewer, quilter, embroider, knitter, and crocheter that's married with four grown children, three small grandchildren, and one very spoiled wire haired Dachshund named Roxie.

Brinkley loves to cook, bake, and decorates her home for every season and occasion. She calls herself an "all around crafter," because she loves anything that allows her to use her creative mind.

How long have you been sewing?

It seems like my whole life. I had a very close-knit family and these skills that we were taught were passed along from generation to generation.

When did you start sewing?

I started sewing at a tiny age with cardboard sewing cards and thread. I remember making my first embroidered potholders in third grade. I also remember going to my Nana's house every night to work on embroidered kitty circles so every lady in our family would get a gift for Christmas.

While I was in the seventh grade, I got my first sewing machine and received sewing lessons from Jeanne Dale Fabrics in Ballard as birthday gifts. I made a plaid jumper and learned how to match plaids and put in a zipper by hand. I was so proud of myself when I was done.

How did you develop your skills?

I developed my skills over the years with a lot of trial and error, lessons, classes, seminars, tips from other people, and reading books.

What do you enjoy the most about sewing and embroidering?

There are lots of things I enjoy about my craft but if I had to pick just one, it would be that in the end, when I'm finished, I have a one-of-a-kind item that nobody else has.

What do you love most about teaching your craft to others? How does it make you feel?

I love what I wouldn't necessarily call teaching, but sharing my love, passing on my enthusiasm and knowledge. I love empowering people to create and set them up to be successful. Nothing makes me feel better than seeing how good people feel when they have completed their project and it turning out better than they imagined.

What can you say to those that are just beginning?

Just jump in there and give it a try. You don't have to have a top of the line sewing machine in order to be successful. Come to a place like Ben Franklin Crafts & Frame Shop that has good quality products for your project and knowledgeable employees and instructors to help you out. Don't be afraid to say "I'm new, I have a question, or I need help." You may not have faith in yourself and your abilities, but I do. You may think you can't, but I know you can! If you have the desire to learn, start taking classes and asking questions. Start small and grow from there.

What words of inspiration would you like to share?

Sewing, quilting, embroidery, needle arts aren't just for "old ladies." This isn't your grandmother's craft anymore. Your project doesn't have to look like everyone else's nor does it have to look exactly like the pattern. Relax, enjoy yourself, and create something that is uniquely yours. There are so many wonderful opportunities to be creative, so I encourage you to jump in there and give it a try!

D.I.Y. Photo Collage Tray

You can use it as a frame to create a photo collage!

Supplies

Black Tray (as shown here)
1 Sheet of Bo Bunny "Timepiece" Paper
1 Sheet of 7 Gypsies Tissue Paper
Sizzix 3D Flower Die
Tim Holtz Idea-ology Embellishments
Photos
Scor-Pal Scor-Tape
Scissors
Brads

All supplies used for this project can be found at our Bonney Lake store.

Use the scissors to cut your photos and the Bo Bunny Timepiece paper to fit the spaces in the tray.
Adhere the paper and photos in the spaces of the tray using Scor-Tape or an adhesive of your choice.
Use Sizzix 3D Flower Die (or another flower die) to cut 8 flower dies from the 7 Gypsies tissue paper to create the flower. Remember, if you do not have a die cut system, you could use our Die Cut Center free of charge when you purchase paper from our store.
Layer the flower cut outs by stacking them all together, and use a brad to secure it. Scrunch or bend the petals upward to give it a 3D effect.
Apply the flower and the Idea-ology embellishments, using the Scor-Tape, on the desired areas of the tray.
Proudly display your photo collage in an area of your home.

D.I.Y. Advice from a Honey Bee

That is one piece of advice a honey bee would give you...and probably your mother, too.

This tutorial is dedicated to our Card of the Month for January, which is "Advice from a Honey Bee" by Ilan Shamir of Your True Nature.

Supplies

1 Advice from a Honey Bee Postcard
1 Barnwood 12 x 12 Frame
1 Sheet 12 x 12 Corrugated Cardboard
Wood Letters to spell the word "BUZZ"
Black Acrylic Paint
Foam Brush
Tape Adhesive
E-6000

All supplies used for this project can be found at our Bonney Lake store.

Gently brush black paint over the ridges to accentuate the texture of the corrugated cardboard with the foam brush. Set aside to let dry.
Once dry, use a tape adhesive to glue the postcard onto the textured (corrugated) side of the cardboard.
Apply E-6000 (or an adhesive of your choice) to the back of the wooden letters to glue onto the cardboard. Set aside to let dry when done.
Insert the cardboard with the postcard and letters into the frame.
Hang your project onto the wall to display proudly.

D.I.Y. Family Blocks

Six Wooden Blocks
7 Gypsies Tissue Paper
Sheet of Black Vinyl
Elegant Finish Metallic Paint in Rich Espresso and Olde World Patina
Mod Podge
Paint Brush
Foam Brush
Scissors

All supplies used for this project can be found at our Bonney Lake store.

Using the foam brush, apply Elegant Finish Metallic Paint in Rich Espresso to the blocks, covering the front and back surfaces.
Set the blocks aside to dry.
We will now accent the blocks with Olde World Patina around the edges. Paint Olde World Patina with a foam brush around the front edges of the blocks.
Use a cloth or a clean foam brush to gently blend the paint.
Set the blocks aside to dry.
Cut the 7 Gypsies tissue paper into strips to fit around the sides of the blocks.
Use Mod Podge to adhere the tissue paper to the blocks.
If you purchase vinyl from our store, you can use our Die Cut Center free of charge to cut out letters to spell the word "Family."
Place each letter onto a block.
Now, proudly display the blocks in your home for everyone to enjoy!

The great thing about this project is that there are an endless number of ways you can design these blocks.

Here's a little inspiration:

1. Use print paper for the front rather than paint.

2. Use print paper instead of vinyl for the letters.

Knitting 101: How to Block Knitting

What is blocking?

Blocking is a method for stretching and easing stitches in a finished knit. The purpose of blocking is to:

Straighten edges, reduce curling
Adjust the shape of a finished garment
Decrease slight variations in length or width between two matching pieces

D.I.Y. Wine Glass Charms

Wine glass charms are easy to create and customize, and great for any holiday or occasion.

Supplies

Champagne, Wine, or Margarita Glass(es)
Beadalon Ear Wires (size and color of your choice)
Beads of your choice and size
Jolee's Jewels Crystallized Elements (or charms of your choice)
Needle Nose Pliers

All supplies used for this project can be found at our Bonney Lake store.

For this tutorial, we will be using 5mm glass beads, Jolee's Jewels Crystallized Elements, and Large Gold Plated Beadalon Ear Wire Hoops to create the wine glass charm.

1. Add beads and charm(s) to the ear wire in the desired pattern.

2. See the end of the ear wire that has the small opening? Bend it upwards (as shown in the photo).

3. Lay the glass onto its side and add the ear wire to the stem. Grasp the ear wire with your fingers to close it, then use the needle nose pliers to bend the wire (that went through the opening) upwards to secure it.

Now, you're ready to serve drinks in style! Wasn't that easy?

Knitting 101: Learning How to Knit

Milly, our Knitting and Yarn Expert, will demonstrate the basics of knitting.

What is Cast On?

Casting on or binding on is the process of creating loops on the needle. After the cast on, you proceed with the knit or purl stitch to start knitting.

What is the Knit Stitch?

The knit stitch is just pulling a loop of yarn through an existing loop on the needle. Pulling it through with the yarn in the back creates the knit stitch.

What is the Purl Stitch?

The purl stitch is similar to the knit stitch, except you are pulling the needle through with the yarn in front.

What is Cast Off?

Casting off or binding off is the process of creating an edge so that your knitting does not ravel.

D.I.Y. Mini Spool Christmas Tree

Supplies

12 Mini Wooden Spools
Print or Patterned Paper
Distress Ink in Vintage Photo
Ink Applicator
Scissors
Ruler
Adhesive
Translucent Tape
Twine
Hot Glue Gun
Die Cut Star
Glitter
Ribbon
Pencil

All supplies used for this project can be found at our store.

The wooden spools we are using for this tutorial are 3/4 in. x 1 in.

Set aside one of the wooden spools as we will be using it later in this tutorial.

Let's get started by applying ink to 11 of the spools.

1. Take a spool, and apply ink to the top, bottom, and around the edges. You can go as light or as dark as you would like.

2. After applying the ink, set aside the spools to let them dry.

3. Select print or pattered papers of your choice.

4. Measure 3/4 inch for the width and cut the strip from the paper.

5. Then cut the strip to a 2.75 in. length.

You can use an adhesive of your choice. For this tutorial, we will be using transparent tape.

6. Take a small strip of tape to adhere one of the paper to the spool.

7. Roll the paper around the spool and take another small strip of tape to seal the paper.

8. Repeat this until all 11 spools are wrapped in paper.

Next, we will create the base of the tree with the spool we set aside in the beginning.

9. Use transparent tape to adhere the twine to the spool.

10. Wrap the twine all around to completely cover the spool.

11. Tie the twine to the spool and remove any excess twine.
12. Apply ink to the twine and also the top, bottom, and edges of the spool.

Once done, set aside. We will organize the spools to get them ready for gluing.

13. Arrange the spools in the order you want them to appear on the tree. You will arrange two sets of two spools and two sets of three spools. We will leave the spools for the star and base on their own

14. Using a hot glue gun, glue the sets of spools, as shown in the photos below. Be sure to align the paper seams of each set of spools as you glue them together.

15. Apply glue to the base spool, then place a set of three spools (paper seam down) firmly to the glue.

16. Apply glue to the bottom seam of the other set of three spools, firmly adhering it on top of the set you just glued to the base.

17. Repeat this procedure for the sets of two spools.

18. Apply the last spool, which your star will go on, to the very top. After gluing all the spools together, this is what your tree should look like.

19. You can use any "tree topper" of your choice. For this tutorial, we used a die cut star from our Die Cut Center and covered it in red glitter.

20. Using your hot glue gun, apply the star to the top spool.

If you wanted to turn this tree into an ornament, take a ribbon and create a loop by tying it into a circle. Then use the hot glue to apply it to the back of the top spool.

Every year, participating stores create a make-and-take around the theme. The make-and-take for Let's EAT! is a recipe page. You go to each store to collect a recipe page, which will be unique to the store, to create your own crafty cookbook.

The recipe page is FREE with any $10 store purchase (post-discount, pre-tax) or you can purchase the recipe page for $2.50. And for every $10 you spend at each store, you will earn a raffle ticket for a chance to win a prize valued at $50!

The word “washi” means handmade Japanese paper. The creationof the washi tape you see today was inspired by a small group of women thatvisited Kamoi Kakoshi, a Japanese company that produces various adhesivemasking tapes. The women requested Kamoi to create more masking tape colorsafter they presented artwork created by several artists using masking tape they had designed with prints and patterns.

Thus, washi tape was born.

This is Ken- he is our recieving guy, (he is a very talented individual). Yesterday he brought in a project he made; it is a grunge board belt. He used grunge board, sticky back canvas, alcohol inks, vintage bottle caps, and a small canvas for the center. He enjoys drawing comic book sketches, painting and creating mixed media pieces. Ken is a great guy and a wonderful addition to the Ben Franklin family!

Great Gift for mom!

Create a personalized gift for your mom by using the Avery Clear Sticker Paper (found in our stamp department). This sticker paper is perfect for printing pictures on and great for applying onto all kinds of smooth surfaces. After I printed the picture onto the paper (using a ink jet printer) I applied it onto this 8x8 glass block, added lights into the glass block, tied a bow around the sides, and added a couple flowers. This is a simple project and under $30.00. This is a wonderful and thoughtful gift for any mom.

Northwest Paper Chase!!!

We are so excited to be participating in the 3rd Annual Northwest Paper Chase Shop Hop! We had a great time meeting all of you that stopped by today. It's always great to meet new friends and help you find what you're looking for.
We also had many people make the "Spring Tag Make-n-Take" after they shopped. Some of you didn't have time to stop and make it, so you took the kit and we just wanted to post the picture in case you didn't remember what it looked like. For those of you who have not made it yet..it's super fun . We can't wait to meet all of you...Happy Shopping!!

Creative Cards with Joy - March

Costa Rica Day and Founders Day Weekend

Costa Rica Day is now over and we raised close to $500 for Sydelle's Senior Project Mission Trip. The full amount will go to a Costa Rica Elementary School. We would like to thank all the customers and staff for participating in this successful event. We are very proud that we could help put this on in our store and help other people in the world.
