I'm working on my own ruffle skirt with Starbella- kind of improvised really; mine has decreases in it going towards the waist, as I didn't want one of those tube mini skirt things. It is to fit a bigger woman (2XL) and I am hoping it will fall a few inches about the knees (about 19" for me, as I have a very short inseam).
ReplyDeleteWhat I *haven't* decided yet is if I am going to do ruffles ALL way the way up- super cute on a little girl, but being a bigger woman, I'm not sure. I think it might be too puffy and out there, so I'm trying to decide how many "ribbon" rows I will be doing. Right now I am doing:
Color A Starbella in Collegiate
Color B Patons Classic in Black
Bottom up- start with seed stitch for 5 rows.
**Color B knit 4 rows in the round; do four equally spaced decreases.*
Color A knit one row, picking up the loops.
Repeat**
So basically, I have a WHOLE lot of fluffy ribbon going on and I'm not sure how many inches I should allow it to be on the skirt, before switching to straight black (Color B), shaped in four spots towards an elastic waistband. Right now, it seems I'm getting about 6 st/in vertically (due to the bigger stitch the Starbella makes), and I was thinking about maybe 6 ruffles? I'm open to any help and any suggestions please! I'm winging it! :)

We suggest doing more than five rows, say about 10 rows between ruffles to lessen the bulk. It also depends on your body type--do you want the skirt to start around the waist or the hip? Milly is in today and is available throughout the week. We highly recommend calling (253) 862-6822 and asking for Milly. ReplyDeleteI am having a difficult time finding Bernat Stretch yarn. What other brands/types of yarn would work for this project? How much "stretch" should the yarn have?

Hi Rhonda! Try using Cascade Fixation to substitute for the Bernat Stretch. You don't need a lot of stretch for a good fit.

ReplyDeleteNo, do not cut the ruffle, but instead you pull up the next ruffle. If you have further questions or if that isn't clear, please feel free to call Milly at our store at 253-862-6822.
DeleteI had to take apart my first attempt because after three rows of Starbella, I realized they were on the outside of my skirt and would therefore be on the inside of the skirt when i finished. I'm not sure how to manuver the Starbella to have the ruffles be on the inside while I'm knitting. A picture of this step or a video would be very helpful. Otherwise, could you explain how to make the ruffles face inside?

I was impatient to wait for an answer so I tried again. I found that if I bring the Starbella up through the inside of the circle and purl (instead of knit) the rows of Starbella, the ruffles can be placed on the inside of the skirt. Hopefully, this will work.

DeleteWhile knitting with starbella premier yarn some stitches fell off my left needle. How do I figure out how to pick up those stitches? Please help!! I don't want to start my scarf from the beginning. Thanks
ReplyDeleteYou may have to undo a couple of rows to see where your stitches are, but there should be loops like what's on your needle. Usually they travel down fast, the stitches, that's why you'll have to undo a couple rows at least. - Milly
DeleteI am knitting this skirt but am not sure if I am doing it right. Some pictures I have seen of the outside looks like rows of stockinette stitch with a few inches of starbella in between but mine looks like solid stockinette stitch. My ruffles are on the inside and of course there is a couple of rows of ruffles on the bottom. I can only see the fine line of starbella yarn. Is this correct.

Yes, you are doing it correctly. The Starbella ruffles will be on the inside until you turn your work.
DeleteCan you explain how you carry the starbella without cutting. I'm knitting 5 rows between each row of starbella and using circuar needles.

ReplyDeleteWhen we knit a Starbella Ruffle Scarf, we actually do every loop. You would want to do every loop for the Starbella Ruffle Skirt, as well.
DeleteHi, I am 4 rows in a step 3 and the work is starting to do the stockinette stitch curl.. So I am wondering if I am supposed to be Turing and going back the other way each round so I get a garter stitch instead to avoid the curling. If not how do I get rid of it?

Did you join it into the round? If not, then it will roll on the sides. Otherwise, continue on and it should work out because you're going to do more rows.
DeleteYes, I joined in so now just a continuous circle going around and it is rolling all around, not just sides. So it is supposed to be stockinette all the way?

Yes, you can use size 7 needles, but since you will have the same amount of stitches in less space, you will need to increase your stitches.
