Glass Block Project: Family

Decorate a glass block and use it to display a favorite family photo!

Crafted by Joy.

Supplies

  • Glass Block
  • Photo
  • Chipboard Frame
  • River Rocks
  • Vinyl Lettering "Family"
  • Burlap Ribbon
  • Scissors

For this project, Joy placed the photo inside a chipboard frame, but you can use any frame you would like as long as you can fit it through the opening of the glass block.

  1. Fill the bottom half of the glass block with river rocks.
  2. Position the frame with the photo inside of the glass block.
  3. Wipe down the surface of the glass where you will be placing the vinyl and adhere it.
  4. Measure and cut burlap ribbon to wrap around the glass block and tie into a bow.

Now, it's ready to display!

    1. Through the opening that is located on top of the glass block. Joy made sure the picture was the right size to fit through the opening.

  2. The glass blocks I have (or any I've ever seen) don't have openings in the top. Can an opening be cut into the top?

    1. Those are called craft glass blocks. Craft glass blocks have openings on the top. You can find those at any local craft store or online.

  4. You can get them at Michael's, Hobby Lobby and even Jo-Ann's in the US and Michael's in Canada, they have about a three inch long hole with a plastic cover....some of the ones at Rona (Canada) have about a 1" diameter hole....

  5. I was just wondering where you got the family lettering? Did it come like that as the whole word or did you have to use separate letters?

    1. We carry a variety of vinyl words and sayings, but also have different styles of individual letters. This is a project post from 2012 and we may not have this exact style at this time.

  6. I love this idea. I took mine to work. It has a photo of my husband and me with "Soulmates" across the top. SO CUTE! When I made mind, I put the opening on the side so the frame was easier to manipulate and place.
