"BOO" Chalkboard Trees

A boo-tiful display for Halloween!

Crafted by Sara.

Supplies

  • Three 10" Paper Cones
  • Three Clear Craft Pails
  • Three 7/16" x 12" Wooden Dowels
  • Three Drawer Pulls
  • One 12" x 12" Sheet Moonlit from Authentique "Thrilling" Collection
  • One 12" x 12" Sheet Antidote from Authentique "Thrilling" Collection
  • One 12" x 12" Sheet Forewarn from Authentique "Thrilling" Collection
  • Black Chalkboard Paint
  • Black Chipboard
  • White Galaxy Marker
  • Martha Stewart Scoreboard
  • White Chalk
  • Foam Brush
  • Adhesive
  • Bakers Twine
  • Paper Shreds
  • Drill and Drill Bits
  • Floral Foam
  • 1/2" Circle Punch
  • Paper Trimmer
  • Scissors

Using the foam brush, apply chalkboard paint to the paper cones and dowels. It is recommended that the paint cure for 24 hours, but you can move forward with this project while it cures. Make sure to condition the paint (after it has cured) by rubbing the all the painted surface with chalk and wipe off. Cut pointed ends of cones so they are flush (same size) as drawer pulls. Drill holes in the center of each dowel to fit the screw end of each drawer pull. Use adhesives to adhere cones to the bottom of the drawer pulls. Screw dowels onto drawer pulls.

Measure and cut the "Moonlit" paper to line two of the clear pails and "Antidote" paper to line one of the clear pails.

Cut 3/4" strips of "Moonlit" and "Antidote" paper. Then, cut the strips into 1.25" rectangles and make a notch on each end of every rectangle to make a flag. Measure and cut a 1/8" strip of paper to go around the top of the pail. Use adhesive or double-sided tape to adhere the flags onto the strip of paper. Punch holes at each end and use bakers twine to tie your banner around the top of the pail.

Score the entire "Forewarn" paper at 1/2" intervals; score design (chevron side) vertically. Cut three 4" strips across the lines. Trim to 9" long. Fold on score lines back and forth, then bend each cut end in half to match sides and create a medallion. Glue and clamp until dry. Tie center with bakers twine with enough length to tie the medallions onto each cone. Tie the medallions to each of the cones.

Cut three 2.5" squares from black chipboard. Use the 1/2" circle punch to cut rounded indents on all corners. Rub chalk onto the surface and wipe off. Create an outline of each letter in the word "BOO" on each chipboard, then fill in with a white galaxy marker. Glue the chipboards to the center of each medallion.

Cut floral foal into three pieces and cut edges to fit inside of every pail. Insert a dowel into each pail, leveling all three cones (so that they are the same height or close to it). Fill in the spaces of the pail and cover up the floral foam with paper shreds.

Now, it's ready to display!

The components of this project are interchangeable so that you can change out the mood of the season.
