White Elephant Gift Ideas from Ben Franklin

White Elephant Gift Exchange Parties are popular around the holidays. They work well for office or family and friend gatherings.  White elephant games can become very competitive as people try to get the sought after items. The goal of the game is to entertain everyone.  The term "White Elephant" refers to an extravagant but burdonsome gift that is not easily disposed of.
White elephant gifts are usually humorous, inexpensive, re-gifted things or used household items.

The Rules:

  • Each participant supplies one wrapped gift.
  • The gifts are placed in a central location such as a table or corner of the room.
  • Participants usually draw numbers to determine the order of choosing your gift.
  • The first person chooses a wrapped gift and opens it.
  • The next person can either choose to "steal" the unwrapped gift, or pick a new wrapped present.
  • If a person's gift is stolen, they pick a new gift to unwrap.
  • The game is over when the last person takes their turn.
  • There are a few variations to the game that specify how many times a gift can be stolen that will speed up the game process.
