How to Create a Colorful Mason Jar Lantern

Mason jar lanterns are fun and festive decorations perfect for weddings and receptions. We are going to show you that these lanterns are not as hard as they may look to make.

Crafted by Joy.

Supplies

  • Pint Mason Jar
  • Adirondack Alcohol Ink
  • Tim Holtz Foam Applicator
  • Wire
  • Acrylic Filler
  • LED Tealight Candle
  • Wire Cutters
  • Inkssentials Non-Stick Craft Mat

All supplies used for this project can be found at our Bonney Lake store.

Coloring the Mason Jar
  1. Apply a small amount of alcohol ink to the foam applicator.
  2. Use a tapping action to cover the mason jar in the ink.
  3. Set aside and let dry when done.
Attaching the Wire
The length and gauge (thickness) of the wire depends on the size of the mason jar and where it will be placed (i.e. on the table, outside on a tree branch).

Watch this video to learn how to wrap the wire around the mason jar.

Rather than clear acrylic filler, you can use:

  • Colored Acrylic Filler
  • Acrylic Gemstones
  • Marbles
  • Pebbles
  • Flowers

Keep in mind the amount and actual weight of the filler you place into the jar as it may become too heavy to hang (if that is how you had planned to use them).

Adirondack Alcohol Ink Lights create soft tints.

Adirondack Alcohol Ink Brights creates vivid, bright colors.

  1. Is the Adirondack Alcohol Ink something that can be found in craft stores or does it have to be ordered?
